One Day at a Time

March 25, 2011

Bruiser is in that terrible place between needing an afternoon nap and not needing one so he will sleep at night.

For several months now Bruiser has given us trouble at bed time. We have finally gotten him to obey and stay in his bed, but he still takes hours to actually fall asleep. He goes to bed between 7:30-8:00 every night except for Wednesdays and doesn’t actually fall asleep until between 9:00 and 10:00. He also naps for about an hour and a half every afternoon. On the days when a nap doesn’t happen, he usually falls right asleep. However, on those days between 4:00 pm and bedtime he becomes a whining, crying, yelling, temper-tantrum throwing, no fun at all ball of boy. My new rock and hard place is: do I deal with 3 hours of Bad Bruiser to trade for falling right to sleep at bed or do I give him a nap only to listen to him sing songs and tell stories in his bed at night for two hours?

Tuesday was a no-nap day. We were out and about town and when we got back I told each boy that they didn’t have to nap since it was so close to supper, but they needed to play quietly in their own rooms. Fifteen minutes later, I found Bruiser like this:

It’s been quite a while since he’s crashed like this all on his own.

So for now, I’m just taking it one day at a time. I have a feeling as the summer comes closer the naps will be pushed aside with all the activity. Especially since I have to fight against the 9/9:30 pm setting sun over here on the west edge of the time zone.

Anyone have any good tips for that in between nap phase?

We are in the same boat with my youngest, but the problem is the oldest still NEEDS her nap, and there are days when she needs to nap. I’m afraid if I let it go then those days she needs to nap she won’t. It’s tough!
